Charlie's story
My wife Deborah smoked when she was a teenager and she died of lung cancer when she was 49 and would never have smoked if she’d known it would kill her.
When she was dying, she always thought about missing her children grow up and knew they’d be really hurt to lose their mother as well. Smoking brings pain to the person who dies and the people they love the most. It’s a selfish habit and it hurts other people, even if you don’t think so at the time.
The doctors couldn’t stop Deborah’s lung cancer killing her and although horrid chemotherapy treatment helped her live a few weeks longer, she died 7 months after she found out. While she was ill, she wrote a book about how to help ill people who the doctors say won’t get better and it was published four days before she died.
You all watch films and TV and now I’d like you to make a film so everyone can hear what you want to say. News, drama, horror, graphic cartoons or comedy; Cut Films is your chance to say what you think about smoking.
I hope your film will explore what you or your friends think or feel about smoking, so maybe you’ll help people not to start.
Your films will be uploaded through this website to YouTube, Facebook and other websites.
The winners receive a two hour film workshop with me, film equipment for your school or youth club, and national publicity.
I hope you enjoy making your films and that you say what you want about the damage smoking does to your body, friends and family. It’s your Cut!
Ready! Camera! Action!
